Arriving in Germany, a whole adventure!
Hey there, I’m Jenny Martiny, a Colombian soul who has called Berlin home since 2001. Let me tell you navigating the uncertainties that come with moving to a new country can be quite an adventure. If you’ve ever found yourself feeling lost in the midst of language barriers and bureaucratic hurdles, trust me, I’ve been there too.
After my time in the bustling streets of New York City, I was buzzing with excitement as I landed back in Berlin. I had big dreams of diving headfirst into the fashion industry, fueled by my studies in Fashion Business Management at Parsons School. With prior experience in the German fashion scene and a newfound fluency in English, I was certain the transition would be a breeze.
Little did I know, the path ahead had its own surprises in store for me. Despite my efforts and the extra boost from upgrading my knowledge in Marketing and Sales during my maternity break, things didn’t unfold as smoothly as I had anticipated.
Navigating work challenges: My journey as an expat in the German marketplace.
Let me take you on a journey through my experiences in the workforce, where unexpected twists and turns shaped my path in Berlin. Buckle up because it’s been quite a ride!
One of the first hurdles I encountered was a toxic work environment. After relentlessly applying for jobs in the industry for a year and a half, I found myself rarely receiving interview invitations. Doubt started to creep in, and I began feeling unconfident and a little down. The time gap in my CV seemed to magnify the uncertainties, leaving me perplexed about the reasons behind it all.
It led me to ponder the preferences of employers in Germany. Did they value work experience over fancy degrees? And were they more inclined towards younger applicants? It didn’t help that I had taken a break from work during my time in America and had been on maternity leave.
Then, out of the blue, an invitation to a job interview landed in my inbox. Excitement filled the air as I stepped into a showroom in Berlin, selling fashion clothing just like I had done before arriving in Germany. However, the environment felt starkly different this time from my previous experiences. It was laced with hostility and stress, which cast a shadow over my enthusiasm.
Despite giving my all during the probationary phase, I found myself unexpectedly let go without any explanation. The whole experience left me feeling disheartened. It wasn’t what I had expected, and it made me question the workplace dynamics. Have you ever found yourself amidst a toxic work environment where a boss seems to target employees from abroad to cut costs for the company?
2: The quest for the right job in Berlin.
Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, but it’s how we respond to them that truly defines us. After facing a setback in my career, I embarked on a journey to find a work environment where my skills and contributions would be truly valued. Little did I know that this quest would lead me down a path of self-discovery and the pursuit of purpose.
As time went on, I found myself being invited to various job opportunities, but none seemed to align with my expectations. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciated the chances that came my way, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wanted to make a meaningful contribution and truly feel like I belonged. It became clear that this phase of my life was about more than just a 9-5 job—it was about finding purpose and meaning in my career.
Of course, salary was an important consideration, as it played a role in the lifestyle I aspired to achieve. After all, our time is precious, and I wanted to ensure that the trade-off was worthwhile. It wasn’t about chasing material wealth but rather creating a fulfilling life that resonated with my values and aspirations.
3: Don’t settle for less than you can become.
With a fresh perspective and a burning desire to create a meaningful impact, I embarked on a journey of exploration. I was determined to find opportunities that aligned with my vision and allowed me to contribute to a greater cause. Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who shared my passion became a priority, and I knew it was time to build my own path.
It was during this time that I stumbled upon a book by Robert Kiyosaki that ignited a spark within me. His words resonated deeply and reminded me of the power of entrepreneurship. After all, life is too short to be spent in a toxic environment, trading precious moments for a job that doesn’t align with our values.
The idea of building my personal brand and pursuing entrepreneurship in Germany began to take shape. I realized I wanted to inspire others, contribute to something greater, and live a life filled with passion and purpose. It was no longer just about making a living; it was about creating a positive impact and connecting with a network of like-minded individuals who shared a similar vision.
4: Why do I believe anyone coming from abroad should pursue a personal brand?
In a world where nothing lasts forever, especially for those of us navigating life as foreigners, it’s essential to recognize the significance of embracing your personal brand, even while working a 9-5 job. As expat global nomads, we have the unique opportunity to create a digital identity that reflects our defined values and supports causes that matter to others. This has become an imperative trait in today’s workforce, allowing us to stay ahead of the game, constantly develop our skills, and expand our knowledge.
Whether you’re planning to embark on an entrepreneurial venture or continue working in a company, investing in your personal brand is a surefire way to cultivate growth. It’s about more than just following trends; it’s about evolving your skill set and expanding your network in the marketplace.
5: Reasons for evolving your personal branding.
In the ever-evolving job landscape, where change is the only constant, having a strong personal brand becomes a safeguard against uncertainty. It provides a platform to demonstrate your versatility, adaptability, and continuous growth. As you navigate your career journey, your personal brand becomes a powerful tool that keeps you relevant and ensures your value in the marketplace continues to expand.
Embracing entrepreneurship meant taking a leap of faith and stepping outside my comfort zone. It was a thrilling prospect, knowing I had the opportunity to shape my destiny and make a difference on my own terms. The path wouldn’t be easy, but I was ready to face the challenges head-on and build something meaningful instead of waiting forever for the right moment.
Building my personal brand became a vehicle for sharing my experiences, inspiring others, and creating a platform for connection and growth. It was a way to channel my passion and contribute to a world where living purposefully and pursuing a greater vision were at the forefront.
